You spoke the thought. The app may even have captured or transcribed it. But the text does not land where your cursor is.
That failure can come from several places:
- The transcription failed.
- The transcription succeeded, but text insertion failed.
- The target app rejected paste or synthetic input.
- macOS Accessibility permission changed.
- A VPN, proxy, firewall, or service incident interrupted the dictation path.
- The dictation app needs to be restarted or updated.
The important thing is to separate "did transcription happen?" from "did paste delivery happen?" Those are different failure modes.
First: check whether the transcript exists
Before changing settings, check the app's history or transcript recovery view. If the transcript exists, the voice recognition path probably worked and the problem is delivery into the target app.
If the transcript does not exist, the problem is earlier in the chain: microphone capture, network, provider, account state, or transcription service availability.
Wispr Flow's own troubleshooting docs point users toward update checks, internet checks, retrying failed transcripts, and history recovery for transcription errors.
Why paste is hard on macOS
Pasting text into "whatever app is currently active" sounds simple. On macOS, it is not.
The dictation app has to coordinate with:
- Accessibility permission.
- The focused application.
- The focused field inside that application.
- Clipboard behavior.
- App-specific restrictions.
- Timing between transcription completion and text delivery.
Most of the time, this works. When it fails, the best product behavior is not to pretend the failure is impossible. The best behavior is to make the transcript recoverable.
What to try when Wispr Flow does not paste
- Check Wispr Flow history and copy the transcript manually if it exists.
- Try a plain text target such as TextEdit or Notes.
- Restart Wispr Flow.
- Check macOS Accessibility permission.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall, proxy, or security tool is interfering.
- Check Wispr Flow status history if failures are widespread or sudden.
- Update the app.
If text appears in a simple app but not in your target app, the issue is likely target-app delivery rather than speech recognition.
The product lesson: paste needs recovery paths
A dictation tool should assume paste can fail sometimes.
Foil is designed around that assumption. It tries to paste into the active app, but it keeps the result reachable through History and clipboard fallback. You can search, copy, paste, edit, export, delete, and retry past transcriptions.
That matters because a dictated thought is often hard to recreate exactly. A failed paste should be annoying, not catastrophic.

When to consider a different dictation app
If paste reliability is your main frustration, look for a tool that is honest about delivery and recovery:
- Does it preserve the transcript if paste fails?
- Can you copy or paste the last result manually?
- Does it separate transcription failures from paste failures?
- Does it explain Accessibility permission clearly?
- Can you change provider routes if the service path is unstable?
